Film log

We filmed the performance element of our practical production piece recently. I personally beleived that it went well as we managed our time well and got at least a third of our filming done in one session. Through managing our time well i met one of my targets for the year.
We filmed the shots of the geeky guy in full costume (glasses, scarve and books) from several different angles, doing a full recording of each one to gain maximum amount of footage to work with when we edit.
The positives to come out of the session were that we finally got some filming done. The footage we produced was all useable and it had a very positive outcome. Additionally we have gained alot of ideas to further our production whilst we were recording such as how we can base the narrative around the performance shots.
There were few negatives to take away from the session but these would be that it may be hard to get the same props again the next time we film, and also that possibly the singing was slightly out in places, this however can be changed de to the mass amounts of footage that we have obtained.
The next part of the film that we need to film are the narrative shots and we will be doing this as soon as possible. We do still need top think of ideas around this area so that we cna get maximum marks.

Video analysis 3

The Fray - How to save a life

Mise-en-scene. - The lighting in this video is very consistant. The only light source is from car head lights or strip lights (in the performance shots only) This creates a blend of shadows and silouets which works well with the song. The head lights create a lot of glare and a high contrast between light and dark. It also seems to wash out any colours that exsist in the house or forest. This is done on purpose to create an atmosphere and help the audience feel involved within the song.

Camera Shots - The video begins with several close up's during the performance shots. This is used to establish who the lead singer of the band is, there is also the use of an extreme close up on the eye. Additionally there is still a wide range of other shots used in this video. For example low angle, close up and establishing shots are all used a number of times in the video, all of which make the video more dramatic.

Editing - The first thing i noticed about the editing is the regular interchange between the performance shots and the narrative shots. the use of quick cuts establishes a relationship between the narrative and the song. There is also several uses of elipsis, i found one moment particularly interesting. There is a girl that is shown several times with the use of close ups and panning camera movement at the start and she seems dull and possibly ill, this links in with the title of the song "How to save a life". This is shown through the use of plain clothing and background. There is a moment during the middle of the video where the girl is then shown wearing a red dress and throwing roses in the air. This represents change and adds to the narrative and shows that the person may be getting better. This idea is furthered due to the tempo of the song also quickening.

Video analysis 2
The Kooks- "She Moves In Her Own Way"

Camera work - The performance shots used at the start of the video are all close ups of the band members. This is done to establish the members of the band. The narrative shots however vary in shot type. There are shots of the bands coach driving to establish the location that they are on the move. Then they arrive in a desolate area and the camera pans across to give emphasis on the poorness of the area around them. This is repeated throughout as there is establishing shots looking out across the city and then a close up of a man pulling some shoes out of a bin.

Editing - Similarily to the previous clip i have analysed there is a constant interchange at the beginning of the video between narrative and performance shots. Additionally there is another similarity with the fact that elipsis is used again, however this time elipsis is used to show a change of location rather than emotion. This again though is used to show a development within the narrative section of the video. I found that fact that similar ways of making the video are demonstrated within several different songs but all from the same genre.

Mise-en-scene - Indie music is typified as going against the mainstream. This is shown at the start as they are in an empty area and then the next shot is a guitar followed by the band. I interpreted this as shwoing that despite being in a desolate waste land they still have their guitars and are willing to make music.

Video analysis 1

Scouting for Girls - " This aint a love song"

Camera work - The opening sequence are all narrative shots. It begins with a close up of a passport being handed over at an airport followed by a close up that follows into the distance of a mans feet with a suitcase next to it. The first performance shot used is a close up of the frontman on the microphone with all the other band members in the background. this could possibly have beend one to show his authority and status among the band.

Editing - What i have noticed has become a common theme among all the videos i have analysed at random. Similar to the others this has an interchange of performance and narrative shots. However there is no use of elipsis during this clip possibly because the narrative dosn't need it. There is however the use of juxtapostions in order to show a development within the narrative.

Mise-en-scene - To go against the mainstream an element of the indie genre is that it often contains odd/strange things that could be described as spontaneous. This is shown by the same shot of a man holding a goldfish in complete darkness re-occurring throughout the media with no apparrent or direct link to the performance or the narrative. Additionally the fact that it is in an airport depicts change. The clothing is all sterotypical of the indie genre and there are no sterotypes that are challenged.

Genre theory and how it applies to my project

Genre theory

John Fiske - "Any one programme will bear the main charachteristics of it's genre, but is likely to include some from others: ascribing it to one genre or another involves deciding which set of charachteristics are most important"

This applies to our project as we are doing a music video to the kooks. The problem we had was that it was hard to define one genre that they would fall into as they could have gone into acoustic, indie, indie rock or rock. However we decided that it suited the indie genre to having the highest amount of charachteristics.

Richard Maltby and Ian Craven claimed that "The success of Hollywood is reliant on the combination of predictable elements with variation." What they were saying is that the only reason Hollywood is a global success is because we as the audience go into a film with an idea of what to expect and prefer to to be able to predict what is going to happen. There theory suggest that the audience don't like surprises in regards to not knowing what to expect. Personally I disagree with this theory because over time, as we watch more and more films, we build a natural bank of information containing repetitive aspects of genres. For example if you go to see a film which you know nothing about, 9/10 you will be able to tell what genre of film it is within the title sequence.

Auteurs and Iconography-
Auteurs are a group of film makers that were considered to be particularly influential and artistic. What this means is that particular names within all platforms of media incorporate certain personal techniques into the majority of there workings as a sort of signature to show that audience that its there film or music track. An example of this is this Steven Spielberg films there is normally a hue on screen which helps give a better sense of atmosphere. This is how a lot of people identify Spielberg films from others.

Rick Altman was a strong believer in that people shouldn't categorise films or another platform of media into genres. He said that;
"Genre theory's presumes that viewers pre-read text." "Viewers become passive voyeurs" "Genres are therefore restrictive" "I do not acknowledge of allow for the hybrid"
What he means by this is that by putting media into genres they go in with an assumption of what to expect. He also claims that because of this we as an audience don't fully engage with the media but do nothing more than drift in and out making it impossible to have a proper story line.

Common representations in Indie Rock

Commonly indie rock bands will be male, white, from a good background and normally in there 20/early 30's. The vast majority of Indie Rock bands will be from America or England. Two examples of this would be 'Franz Ferdinand' who are from Glasgow, Scotland. And 'The Fray' who are from Denver, Colorado.

There are very mixed stereotypes when it comes to Indie Rock bands. For example, the bands which I'm looking at are commonly represented in a positive light. You don't hear about them taking drugs or drinking in excess, unlike other bands like 'Babyshambles'. The key member of this band is Pete Doherty who is forever in the papers and on the news for a whole array of criminal offenses and for going to rehab.

I think that the bands portray themselves in quite a traditional way in what sort of clothes they wear, which are normally quite retro and have a tatty yet smart look to them. On the other hand I think there represented in the media in quite a modern light in that because its still a relatively new genre new ideas and opinions are still being formed.

Indie Rock bands aren't normally shown in negative ways in the media which I think is a good thing as there main audience could be influenced by there actions. Of course theres an exception to the rule, with people like Pete Doherty who sets a bad example for his target audience.

Location photo shoot.

Location's.

These are some of the locations that we are going to attempt to film our music video in. We chose these places because they are always accessible as they are at my school. This makes them practical aswell as having varying areas. This includes toilets, in an orchard and various places throughout the indoor of the school.

Stone Roses - I wanna be adored \

The video begins with an establishing shot of a sandy area and this then passes through pyramids. I noticed that with the song being called "i wanna be adored" and the fact that a pyramid is the pinnacle of the opening clip. Pyramids are obviously synonymous with kings and being adored. There is then several uses of pull focus before it then cuts to a long shot of the whole band playing the song on the beach that was previously used.

Brief

I am going to be making a music video for The kooks song "naive". This song falls into the music genre of indie music. In later posts i will be covering and going into further depth about indie music so as to give a better idea of whether our music video meets the conventions of indie music or even possibly challenges them.
The general conventions of indie music are:

1. It is aimed at students or people around the age of late teens, target audience are male and secondary audience female.

2. They always use instruments, most notably acoustic guitar is a quintessential element of indie music. It is also recognised as having a fast tempo and a "feel good aura"

3. Indie music is independent from a label so the listeners of indie music feel that they are music "realists" and that the bands are doing their music for the love of music. However Indie often becomes popular with certain sterotypes of people (as previously mentioned students" and then becomes commercialised "indie pop" and enters the mainstream. This is ironic as this is what indie music is trying to get away from.

4. Use of extreme close ups are prominent within music videos of indie music.

The Kooks - Naive Lyrics/Interpretation

I'm not saying it was your fault
Although you could have done more

Oh you're so naive yet so

How could this be done
Your such a smiling sweetheart
Oh and your sweet and pretty face
In such an ugly way
Something so beautiful
That everytime I look inside

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me

I may say it was your fault
Cause I know you could have done more

Oh you're so naive yet so

How could this be done
By such a smiling sweetheart
Oh and your sweet and pretty face
In such an ugly way something so beautiful
Everytime I look inside

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me

How could this be done
By such a smiling sweetheart

Oh you're so naive yet so

Such an ugly thing
Someone so beautiful
And everytime you're on his side

I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it maybe be she's still out to get me

And I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it maybe be she's still out to get me

Just don't let me down
Just don't let me down
Hold on to your kite
Just don't let me down
Just don't let me down
Hold on to your kite
Just don't let me down
Just don't let me down
Hold on to this kite
Just don't let me down

Interpretation

To me it sounds like she's cheating and he knows it, and she knows he knows, but he doesn't want to bring it up.

lines that support this :
"And everytime you're on his side"
suggest cheating

"I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking"
suggests what i said about him not wanting to bring it up

"Oh you're so naive yet so"
naive in that she thought he wouldnt find out

How this will effect my narrative plan

This will affect my narrative plan for the music video as it will mean that i will have to base the narrative around the lyrics of the song. We already have several ideas for this and these include :

1. A close up shot of a boy with girls talking around him and him showing no emotion or even noticing their existence. This will link well with the idea of naivity throughout the text.

2. Several shots with the boy having a look of distinct worry and nervousness around females. This fits into context with the line "I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking"

3. A mishot of a boy walking noticing the girl he likes walking with another boy and a surge of anger becoming distinctly apparent, this fits into the whole context of the song but in particularly with the repeated line "And everytime you're on his side"

Research into Indie genre.

Indie is a term used to describe independence from major commerical record labels and has a "Do It Yourself" attitude.
During the 1950's and 60's major record companies had so much power that it became virtually impossible for independent labels to become established. This was due to the best artists on the independent labels either failing to make it commercially and dieing out or by being snapped up by the big money spending major record companies.
Punk rock gave independent labels a huge boost during the 80's as there were hundreads of different acts pouring into the music industry this resulted in the first UK Indie chart. From this point onwards the independent music industry became better organised.

Analysis of The Charlatans.

The Charlatans

The band originally formed in the West Midlands by bassist Martin Blunt, who recruited fellow West Midlanders; Rob Collins (keyboards), Jon Brookes (drums), John Baker (guitar) plus vocalist Baz Ketley, who was almost immediately replaced by Tim Burgess. They formed in 1988 and released they're final album in 2006.
The band are famous for having an heavy essence in the Madchester scene. The band are known as being a bit naughty and often were in the press for mis use of drugs or other areas of crime. This peaked with the band suffering a major setback when Rob Collins was charged with armed robbery after his friend had robbed an off licence while he was waiting in the car outside. He served four months in prison as a result of this.

Analysis of The Twang

The Twang

The Twang are an indie rock band from the Birmingham area. They formed in 2001 and are still going at the present. The band consists of vocalist and lead guitarist Phil Etheridge, bassist John Watkins, drummer Matt Clinton along with back up vocalist Martin Saunders and guitarist Stu Hartland.
The band first hit national stardom when they were interview by acclaimed magazine NME in an article about the best bands to come from the west midlands and they were only second to The Enemy.
They belong to the record label B-unique which also has acclaimed bands Kaiser chiefs and the ordinary boys. They're live shows are acclaimed for violence between fans of the band and security staff and doormen, this is possibly due to the style of the music that they play appeals to people involved in football hooliganism, since however the band has released statements saying they don't promote violence and that they're is a need for higher security measures at their shows.
They have released two albums named "Love it when i feel like this" and "Jewellery Quarter" enjoying notable success with both despite the heavily controlled charts of todays music.

Analysis of Oasis.

Oasis

Oasis formed in 1991 as a branch of a different band called "The rain" as a result of a partnership between siblings Liam and Noel gallagher. The band recently split in late 2009 and liam has gone on to create a band called beady eye with the remaining memeber of oasis due to the departure of Noel Gallagher. The band hope to release a single in late 2010 and an album in early 2011.
Liam is famous for his onstage antics such as using a star shaped tambourine similar to that of Ian Brown and lead singer of The Jam Paul Weller. He had a troubled childhood and was only interested in music in his late teens. he began an obsession with John Lennon of the beatles and was once quoted as saying he was "John Lennon re-incarnated", this offended some as it was seen as an offence to John Lennon and some saw it as an insightful comment.

Analysis of The Stone Roses

The stone roses

The stone roses we an alternative rock band formed in the late 1970's playing through to the 1980's. They were a pioneering band in the madchester scene. Which since has evolved into the rave scene. Additionally the madchester scene was synonmous with drug use often through ecstasy pills heightening the "lovey dovey high".
Frontman Ian Brown has since gone on to produce several singles album that have been highly acclaimed by his fans. In previous years his attitude gave him a self acclaimed "god like status", his antics gave him a reputation of being a love me or hate type of person.
Ian's right hand man was lead guitarist John Squires. He was said to be able to play chords and riff's that not even an angel could compare with. He was always joining in with Ian's antics and used the star shaped tamborine as a prop on stage which is now often used by people such as liam gallagher frontman of stone rose's style band oasis.

Review of skills.

Strengths
During my first year of sixth form I underwent the As Media course. I had no done media at GCSE level so i had alot to learn. I eventually managed to learn several key skills and aspects of media and i will now talk about each of these in depth.

Camera Work

When i came to the practical element of the subject, we were asked to make a 2 minute beggining to a film of our choice. We chose to do a team comedy and we had to take into account he types of shots that we would need to film. This included using the correct equipment to set up the shot such as tripods or dolly cranes. I feel that this will be useful for our second year of media as we may have to go into deeper detail with several aspects of camera work in order to create representations amongst other ideologies.

Analysis

For the exam section of the course i learnt how to analyse clips so that i would be able to comment on them into great depth and comment on how they represent people and create different situations and atmospheres. The fact that i consider this a strength became evident when i acheived a B grade in the January exam.

However there are several aspects of media that i need to improve in order to gain a similar grade in this section of the course. Most notably is:

Time management

Last year during our practical work, as a result of poor time management i ended up having to do alot of work towards the backend of the course and having to rush it. This possibly has prevented me from gaining a higher grade than the C i got. We had to do the majority of our filming during the last week of term. Aswell as doing a half hearted blog that was merely 10 posts. This is something that i need to address and i have taken oppurtunities given to me through free periods to do as much work as i can.

Double Checking Work

Through re-reading my blog posts from last year i have noticed that there are several aspects that i should have included with ease. I did not give in depth accounts of what went wrong during my evaluation and through a sheer lack of organisational skills i forgot to upload several pieces of work such as storyboards. This is a major flaw as i could have acheived much higher grades through simply uploading work.
